Abstract

Artificial Intelligence is at the center of many discussions regarding the risks and benefits it could carry. The vocabulary of ethics is now widely used in order to build trust towards AI. Yet, the whole narrative stems almost uniquely from Western reflections leading to oriented ethical principles supposed to have a universal significance. Looking closely at the subject, it is clear that the ethical narrative is, first, not based on ethical grounds but on vested interests, and, second, deprived of non-Western perspectives. This chapter aims at questioning the relevance of ethics as it is used in the field of AI and at calling for deeper and broader ethical assessment of AI.

Keywords

ethics, artificial intelligence, culture, pluralism, universalism
